By noon last Saturday, registration for one of my new online classes filled. Almost all are previous students returning for another online experience—five days of fabric collage—from anywhere in the world.

And let me tell you, this makes Tom and I feel amazingly good. What we worked hard to create, the framework and implementation for a week of online learning, has created online friendships and a community of fellow fabric collage enthusiasts.

Even though one of the two newly scheduled Live Online Fabric Collage classes is full, there are still a few spots open in the other. Interested in joining us?

Here are the dates and links again for your convenience:

November 7-11, 2022

January 30-February 3, 2023

As of 9/3/22, class is now full, please contact Tom ([email protected]) to add your name to waiting list if you are interested.

One thing you might not realize, is that when you sign up for one of my Live Online classes, you get a two-fer. You get both me as a teacher and Tom as facilitator behind the scenes.

For the online class to work, there has to be a ton of images flying from my students to me via email. There’s no way I could do that on my own.

So here’s Tom’s job: First he keep tabs on me so he knows when to warn the next group of students that I will be visiting them. He then alerts students that they should send him images. He compiles the images in an online slide program so that I and my students can see them at the same time las we talk about the images and I annotate them on the screen. Then the process starts all over again.

Here’s what some previous students have said about how Tom helps the process:

LeahGrace Kayler:

I thought you and Tom put together a program that was as carefully crafted as your collages. Small things, like Tom’s endless patience in receiving many photos at once, yet having them ready for your 1:1 coaching sessions right away, meant we didn’t skip a beat. Tom’s constant helping presence and occasional insights about someone’s work were a nice complement to your wonderful teaching sessions as well as your exquisite attention to each of us in coaching sessions. How could you possibly have focused on all the background “stuff”?

Martha Beauchamp:

The two of you definitely do this as a team and it shows. Without Tom’s technical skills, it would not have been as smooth.

Grace Crocker:

Tom handles the technical side, dealing with both Susan’s needs and her students, and this allows Susan to concentrate on the class and specific student needs. It works seamlessly. Three cheers for the team!

I think I’ll stop there before Tom’s head gets too big, but you get the idea.

If the technical side of Live Online Classes has made you hesitate to sign up, just know that you have us—both of us—to help you through it.

  • Bravo Tom! I know how much work it takes to keep an online event running smoothly. You two make an inspiring team. Sorry I will miss you today as I head back to OOB from Bar Harbor at about the same time you will be driving here from Harpswell. Onward!
