Susan Carlson June Quilt Retreat: All Levels

06/16/2017 - 06/19/2017 All day
Harpswell Inn
Harpswell Inn, Lookout Point Road, Harpswell, ME, United States

Sorry. This class is full.

This retreat will be held at the Harpswell Inn, mere footsteps away from Casco Bay and half a mile from my studio. The Harpswell Inn, established in 1761, is a favorite for those who really like to experience the whole Maine “thing.” A classic white New Englander with plenty of character overlooking the islands of Middle Bay, and a local lobster pound.

If you haven’t taken a class with me before or if you need a refresher, this class is for you, though any level may sign up. I start each morning with about an hour-long demonstration that will lay out the basics of fabric collage and will give you the information you need to start your work day. I will then visit each student in turn to address individual needs and your project’s unique challenges.

    SORRY THIS CLASS IS FULL

If you are taking the advanced class, you’ve attended at least two classes with me previously. You know the basics and want to get right down to work on a challenging new project or continue a project already started. I skip the introductory fabric collage demos and focus instead on techniques that can take a project beyond the basics.

This retreat is hosted in Portland, Maine, the state’s largest city (though small by most “city” standards) and a mere free shuttle ride away from the Portland International Jetport. Hyatt Place Portland-Old Port is a modern hotel nestled in the heart of the city’s arts, food, and shopping district. It also offers panoramic views (from suites with balconies) of the working waterfront, Casco Bay and its islands. Special lodging prices vary seasonally. Portland classes are five days long.

Using her own free-hand fabric collage process, Susan treats fabric as one would apply paint, adding layer upon layer until the desired effect is reached. Working with your own design, Susan leads you step-by-step, from fabric selection through quilting and binding. Through your choice of fabrics, she'll help you find the patterns, textures, and colors to reveal the unique aspects of your subject matter. This is a template-free class, encouraging playfulness, serendipity, and a willingness to cut loose. Typical subject matter include animals, people, and still-lifes.

  • 11/14/2017 - 11/18/2017 All day

Class Description: Create a fabric collage quilt of your own chosen subject using Susan's innovative layering/collage method. From the MISA wesbite:

Susan Carlson is an artist by birth, a teacher by calling, and an author by choice. She has been developing and practicing her own technique of fabric collage quilting for over thirty years, teaching it for 20 years, and has written two books describing it (Freestyle Quilts and Serendipity Quilts).

Each year she travels around the country and internationally helping hundreds of students to discover and set free the quilt artist inside. Her quilts have won awards from the American Quilter’s Society and the International Quilt Festival. Susan is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art and a long-time student of the Meta Carlson Studio of Fabric Creations (aka her mom's sewing room).

    Cutting Loose

This class demonstrates a looser approach to the piecing and assembly of a wall quilt. Emphasis will be placed on the collage piecing process. Patterns or templates will not be used. Instead, students will sketch their design onto a foundation fabric and fill in the design with fabrics of their choice. This encourages playfulness, serendipity, and a willingness to “cut loose.” Due to time constraints, students need to create a fish, butterfly, or bug. Optional designs will be available from Susan for a small fee.
